Help for Your Heart
Posted by: | CommentsHelp for Your Heart
God’s Word is amazingly beautiful, speaking to our circumstances as no other words can. One verse that is a favorite of mine is Psalm 61:2. I have quoted it to hurting people for many years now and have clung to it myself during times of trouble. So many times when seeking to encourage someone else this verse has come into my heart and spirit. As I thought on the beauty of these words today, I wanted to share some simple truths from this verse.
When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:2
- Sometimes our hearts are overwhelmed. One definition of overwhelmed is to overcome completely in mind or feeling. There are times in our human experience that our mind and/or feelings are completely overcome.
- There is a Rock that is higher than we are. God is our Rock. A rock is a sturdy, firm foundation.
- There are times when we can’t find the Rock by ourselves. We need someone else to lead us to Him.
- His perspective is higher than ours. God has the vantage point from which He sees more than we do.

Love Letters
Posted by: | CommentsDo you keep little notes and cards that people have given you? I have notes from my husband and children and friends that I keep in a special place. I have messages on my phone that I don’t erase. While I may not consciously think about the scripture “The power of life and death are in the tongue”, my actions almost always tell me that it is true.
I have a note on my desk that my husband wrote to me this year. In fact, I have an entire box of love letters that he and I wrote to each other over 30 years ago when we were dating.
I keep a note in my purse that my son Andrew wrote to me for Mother’s Day one year. I have a message saved on my phone from my son Elliott because it captures his sweet heart as he tells me he loves me. I keep a card from my daughter Kara Beth which expresses her heart for me. I have a note from my son Nathan that pictures his love for me. I have a card my brother wrote for me right before I got married.
My friends and I laugh at each others and say we are “wordy” girls or “wordsmiths”. We love a good card or a book that reads us.

The Question Lodged Deep in our Hearts
Posted by: | CommentsI so enjoy the daily e-devotions that are written by John Eldredge. They are usually excerpts from his books including Wild at Heart, Waking the Dead, The Sacred Romance, etc. For me, they are so real and provide such a revealing glimpse into my heart. The following is today’s devotional which leaves you with a question. I find that our real relationship with God allows us to ask very hard questions about God’s heart. He is not threatened by our questions for He knows that in our journey to find the answers, we find out what is true about Him. And that is the truth that sets us free.
The question lodged deep in our hearts, hidden from our conscious minds, is: “Do you care for me, God?”
What’s under that question?
Blaise Pascal, in his Pensées, says, “The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of.” What’s under that question is our personal stories, often punctuated by the Message of the Arrows: parents who were emotionally absent; bedtimes without words or hugs; ears that were too big and noses that were too small; others chosen for playground games while we were not; and prayers about all these things seemingly met with silence. And embedded in our stories, deep down in our heart, in a place so well guarded that they have rarely if ever been exposed to the light of day, are other grief-laden and often angry questions: “God, why did you allow this to happen to me? Why did you make me like this? What will you allow to happen next?” In the secret places of our heart, we believe God is the One who did not protect us from these things or even the One who perpetrated them upon us. Our questions about him make us begin to live with a deep apprehension that clings anxiously to the depths of our hearts . . . “Do you really care for me, God?”
