It’s Not About the Nail

Throughout the years, my husband and I have repeated versions of this scene over and over. I would endeavor to explain how I felt about some issue, the anger, the pain, the disappointment. And Eddie, being a very linear thinker, would assume, falsely, that I wanted a solution when in fact what I wanted was just for him to listen. To empathize. To feel my heart. To allow me to explore how I felt. Why I felt it. And just to sort out all the emotions as I talked through it. For me, the process allowed me to clarify my feelings and decide how to respond.

One on One with God

One of the perks of my job is that I get to spend one on one time with individuals. Time when my job demands that I listen, with both my ears and my heart. Time when I not only listen, but I watch. Watch for body language that speaks a myriad of truths ranging from fear, to grief, to anger, to joy. Time to say, “You matter,” I’m sorry for your pain,” “You are important,” and more.

How God Speaks to Us Through Our Emotions

Posted by: | Comments (1)

angerWhat emotions are you feeling right now? Can you name what is happening inside your inner world? Could God be speaking to you through your emotions?

Are you annoyed, ashamed, confused, hurt, depressed, jealous, anxious, fearful, stressed, angry, or sad?

While it may sound like a simple task to name what emotions you are experiencing, I haven’t always been able to do that and I’ve found in my work as a therapist, that many, many folks are not able to accurately name what is happening inside them.

Can You Hear Me Now?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

hearing“Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now?”

Verizon Wireless brilliantly captured millions by saying what no one was openly saying at the time: cell phone reception isn’t always great. The message of how frustrating it is to not be heard struck a chord with multitudes who switched to Verizon hoping they would be heard clearly more often.

Deeper still is the longing to be heard that rises from every human heart. Truly heard. Understood. Often and clearly.

In my counseling practice, it is important that I understand my clients.  I often pray that God will allow me to draw from the deep waters of a client’s heart (Proverbs 20:5). When that happens, that tangible gift of understanding, I know it. I feel it. God is with us in the moment and He invites us into the deep waters. Understanding comes. Healing comes.
