Riding the Wave

riding the wave

Sometimes life is like a wave of the ocean. It has the potential to knock you down and crash over you if you don't ride it out the right way.

My most recent wave was surgery that I did not have in my Day Planner until a couple of months ago. It was not on my list of Most Wanted Things to Do or Most Beautiful Places to Go. Nonetheless, after considering the options and praying about it, I felt a lot of peace about the surgery.

I anticipated a little down time afterwards. A little down time. But I thought I might be back at work in less than two weeks. After all, I just sit at my job, right?

When Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, many saw him coming as their deliverer and believed he was coming to deliver them from the crushing rule of Rome. They knew the prophecy of Zechariah, “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” We are told that a great multitude spread their clothes out on the road as an act of homage for royalty. They recognized that Jesus was indeed saying he was their king. They shouted and rejoiced.

“You can’t please everyone, so you gotta please yourself.” The lyrics to Ricky Nelson’s Garden Party were looping through my brain as I awakened.

Why were the words to a hit song from 1972 playing in my head? Was it too many Cheerios at bedtime? Maybe I heard it on the TV or radio??

Knowing that God, who never sleeps, often speaks to me “in the night season” (Psalm 16:7, Psalm 17:3, Job 33:14-18), I paused and to check in with the Holy Spirit to see if it was than just a random coincidence. Now that may sound weird, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve awakened to a song or a dream or a thought or some communication from God who sometimes bypasses my thinking mind, which darts to and fro and can be prone to ignore his quiet promptings, and speaks to my spirit when my mind is quiet.

christmas ballI suppose I’ve always been a romantic at heart, at least in the sense that I have an unspoken belief that life should be full of magical moments that take my breath away. Like many others I’ve believed that Christmas should always be magical.

My romantic ideas have not always served me well. At times, they have sent me on an endless search for a ‘perfect’ gift, or led me to work to exhaustion to present my home in Christmas splendor, moved me to send a hundred Christmas cards, or left me feeling empty when I opened that less than perfect gift.

Life is not always magical, and sometimes falls short of our expectations.
