happy thanksgiving

I awakened early today. Drawn into the still quiet moments while awaiting the sun’s arrival, I heard lyrics playing in my head. “Your constant grace remains my cornerstone.” A gentle joy filled my heart as I thought of what a perfect Thanksgiving reflection those lyrics express.

The years come and go. Life’s transitions continue but my constant cornerstone truly remains the mercy and grace of God.

Psalm 136 beautifully expresses what my heart feels. “Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, … Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever.”

God’s good heart remains constant amidst the ever changing days of my life. He has been and continues to be faithful to me.

Lawrence2015Holiday-84A quiet expectancy dances in my heart. The holiday season is on my doorstep.

I prepare to receive my family and guests. Meals are planned as my daughter and I make the menu and think of the favorite recipes each family member loves. There will be smoked turkey this year. A green bean casserole that is made from scratch – no canned mushroom soup in this one. Sweet potato casserole (recipe follows) and mashed potatoes, too. Macaroni and Cheese made with smoked Gouda and other delightful cheeses. Dressing and a special cranberry sauce. Purple hull peas and piping hot rolls with butter. Cheesecake and Maple Walnut Cream Pie and Apple Pie and Chocolate Chip Cookies and Pumpkin Snicker Doodles. Carbohydrates and sugars will be temporarily welcomed to the table in great numbers. Old and new recipes guide our work. (Ah, so many good recipes and so little time to both prepare them and eat them.)The cooking has already begun.  Last minute trips to the grocery have happened and will continue to happen.

Remembering God at Thanksgiving

Posted by: | Comments (1)

happy thanksgivingHas the giving of thanks disappeared from your Thanksgiving Day?

Thanksgiving has been a national holiday in America since 1863 when Abraham Lincoln set the day aside as a day of prayer and thanksgiving.  In our society today, the idea of a Thanksgiving holiday brings thoughts of food, time off work, shopping, ballgames, family get-togethers and more. Yet I wonder how often this day will lead us to times of true giving of thanks and prayer?

Recently I was meditating on Psalm 78 and paused at the invitation to share God’s goodness with our families in verses 4-5 “…telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done…. He commanded our fathers that they should make them known to their children that the generation to come might know them, The children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children, that they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God but keep His commandments.”

1happy-thanksgivingWe all want to be happy, thankful people, yet we sometimes find ourselves being miserable. Life can throw us curveballs, tough times, and painful circumstances. At those times, we may have to work hard to be thankful. But what about the times when life is okay, not perfect, but reasonably good. How many times do we find our hearts being filled with anxiety, stress, and negativity?

Do we really have a choice in our attitude? If you say yes, do you find yourself able to make a choice about your attitude or are you stuck, trapped, bound in the mire of negative yuckiness?

Paul, whom God used to write much of the New Testament, reflected on the difficult points of his Christian life in 2 Corinthians 11.

How Can I Thank God in Tough Times?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

 What is thanksgiving?

Today is Thanksgiving Day in America. A day when many families get together and celebrate a holiday. A day of food, fellowship, football games on television, and a day of searching the web and the newspaper to discover what will be on the best sale on the day after Thanksgiving.

And as I pause today to thank God for his blessings and others for their love and kindness, I wonder if I can define “thanksgiving”.

Does giving thanks mean that we deny any difficulties which might be in our lives at the present time? Does it mean that we are thankful even for the very difficulties themselves?

Well, Christians throughout the ages have wrestled with those questions.
